Bayplex facing work deadline
A municipal councillor says work needs to start on the Bayplex within the next three months in order to meet the targeted reopening date.
“I was told it needs to start by July in order for us to be ready in time to meet the soft date opening of August 2019 and the opening in September 2019,” said Dist. 10 Coun. Darren Bruckschwaiger.
“We have to be up and running within the next couple of months.”
Bruckschwaiger said funding is going from the federal government to the province and then needs to be finalized by the province.
“It’s just a matter of completion of the finances and waiting for the start date.”
Bruckschwaiger said he’s not concerned as he has been assured by the three levels of government the money is on the table.
“It’s just a matter of getting things signed off and away we go.”
Due to its deteriorating condition, the Bayplex was closed in July 2017 for repairs.
The Cape Breton Regional Municipality has budgeted Bayplex repairs at $9 million over two years costshared equally by the three levels of government.
Things are quiet around the Bayplex in Glace Bay, which closed in July 2017 for renovations. Work should begin soon for the expected reopening in September 2019.
