The final show of the Highland Arts Theatre winter/spring season features a new take on a classic childhood tale.

This time, Oscar Wilde’s “The Happy Prince” has been adapted by Leslie Arden into a chamber musical.

“The Happy Prince” is a story about friendship between a swallow who has stayed too long in northern climates and a bejewelled statue that overlooks a city rife with inequality and greed.

Ron Jenkins, who has directed previous HAT productions like “Next To Normal” and “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” will direct “The Happy Prince,” while Chris Mounteer will direct the music.

The show will feature an allfemale cast as part of a season filled with adaptations retold from female perspectives. The show features such familiar faces as Katherine Woodford, Emily O’Leary and Morgan Reid.

“We have so many incredibly talented women on this island and it is always a joy to feature them prominently,” says HAT artistic director Wesley J. Colford. “This season has been especially poignant and we are proud to do our part to amplify the voices of women.”

The show runs every night until Sunday at 8 p.m. and an additional show will be staged May 25. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the HAT box office, open 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Monday to Friday, over the phone at 902-565-3637 or by visiting the Highland Arts Theatre website at www.highlandartstheatre.com.
