A charitable organization is wanted to share in the spoils from an autumn feast at the Fortress of Louisbourg.

Each year, the Fortress of Louisbourg Association and Parks Canada partners with a non-profit group for a fundraising event called Fortress Feast. In 2017, the dinner raised money for the Society of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians.

“It’s a great honour for the association to partner with different organizations each year to hold a successful fundraising event in collaboration with Parks Canada,” said Michelle Lahey, the association’s incoming executive director, in a written release.

“Having the opportunity to present $3,800 to the Society of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Nova Scotians this past year was great, and we look forward to working with another charity again this fall.”

This year, organizers are seeking to work with a youth-focused group. Admission to the Fortress for people 17 years old and younger is free in 2018, as Parks Canada celebrates youth by encouraging them to learn and explore the history and culture of Canada.

Beginning in 18th century Louisbourg, the traditional feast, known by a variety of names including Michaelmas, Feast of St. Michael, and Feast of the Archangels, was held in late September. It was doubly special because workers at Louisbourg received their annual wages on the day of the feast that also celebrated the richness of the fall harvest.

Last year’s event included a salute to the king, a cocktail reception featuring Fortress Rum, a unique period meal, a concert by Anthony Rissesco and Roger Stone, and fireworks.

Groups and organizations interested in partnering for the feast are asked to email info@ fortressoflouisbourg.ca for more information.
