Paving the way in New Waterford

Eight roads to be fixed this construction season

Some temporary inconveniences in New Waterford and Glace Bay this summer will all be paved with good intentions.

Sean MacLellan, supervisor of engineering services for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, said capital paving projects will be going on throughout the summer, including eight in New Waterford and six in Glace Bay.

MacLellan said these are road reconstruction projects.

“Digging out the old asphalt, putting new gravel and new asphalt in.”

In New Waterford, portions of First Street, Second Street and Plummer Avenue are being paved. The work in New Waterford began earlier this month.

“Just working on this end will take a few more weeks to complete but we’ll be there throughout the summer working on the other roads,” MacLellan said.

The other roads to receive paving in New Waterford include Duke Street, Gordon Street, John Avenue, Waterview Street and the lower end of Mahon Street.

MacLellan said these are some of the many roads throughout the CBRM in bad shape.

Some of the streets have gone 30 years without work done to them, he said.

“We identified some with the monies we have and we’ll keep working on them.”

MacLellan said Municipal Ready-Mix Ltd. won the general asphalt tender for all of east division.

In Glace Bay, roads to be paved include Sydney Street, Macnamara Street, Nolan’s Lane, Blackett Street and Sterling Lane. The CBRM is also looking at doing a water line on Norwood Street.

As well, Levattes Lane in Louisbourg is being paved.

“Work will continue throughout the summer months and into the fall when we hope to have everything completed.”

Overall, 27 roads in the CBRM are being paved this construction season.

MacLellan said they realize construction does create some disturbance to the residents.

“We do our best to limit that disturbance,” he said.

“This work is required and it’s an inconvenience but a great benefit when we’re finished.”

Dist. 11 Coun. Kendra Coombes said she’s happy so

many roads are being paved in her district.

“The final J-Class roads are being done as well as other roads in the district,” said the New Waterford area representative.

Coombs said the J-class

roads are provincial roads and the CBRM kicked in money to see them get paved. Some of the New Waterford roads being paved this year might have been graded or received minor work in the past but basically hadn’t seen any

major work since they had been built.

“If we had more money we could have done more this year but unfortunately we didn’t have any more.”
