The former Glace Bay Post Office will soon be history.

The demolition of the 58-year old building on Main Street has begun.

The tender for the demolition was awarded to B. Curry & Sons Construction Ltd. for $462,610.

“They are in there removing the hazardous materials now just before they do the demolition,” said Paul Burt, manager of building planning and licensing laws for the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

In October 2017 through help from Cape Breton Canso MP Rodger Cuzner, the CBRM purchased the former Glace Bay Post Office for $1 from the federal government.

The CBRM intends to build a new east division police station at this location.

Burt said the CBRM hired a consultant for a complete hazardous materials assessment prior to issuing the tender so the contractor would know what would have to be removed and remediated before the demolition.

According to details on the permit the contractor is estimating demolition completion by July 27.

“It will probably be done before that,” Burt said.

“The contractors like to give themselves a little extra time in case there are any hiccups or delays. Once the remediation work has been completed things will move pretty quickly after that.”

The area was chosen as the site for the new police station for various reasons including the property having different entrance and exit points for emergency vehicles and access to the public.

A road behind the property provides access to McKeen Street.
