Ace up their sleeves

Local theatres chasing fundraising bucks

- BY CAPE BRETON POST STAFF

Cape Bretoners will have a chance to “Chase the Ace” at Casino Nova Scotia in Sydney, for the benefit of theatres in the CBRM.

Chase the Ace for the Arts is a combined fund-raising effort, to be shared equally between The Savoy Theatre, The Highland Arts Theatre and The Louisbourg Playhouse. It will be hosted by Casino Nova Scotia in Sydney.

Casino Nova Scotia recently became a Savoy Theatre Gold level sponsor and, during talks with the Savoy, decided to look for other ways to show support to the local arts and entertainment community. Initial sponsorship opportunities were sought out by Savoy board member, Deana Lloy, who brought the casino and the Savoy together during the 90th anniversary celebrations of the historic theatre.

“We’re so grateful to the casino for their continued generosity and for recognizing the value of these venues and the service they provide in our communities,” said Lloy.

Upon learning the casino was interested in helping with a new endeavor, Savoy

Theatre Manager Pam Leader contacted the Highland Arts Theatre and the Louisbourg Playhouse.

“We’re stronger together and all three of our venues absolutely need fundraising dollars in order to survive, so we’ve been meeting with Sean Coyle and Greg Matthews from Casino N.S. for the past month to organize this project,” said Leader.

Chase the Ace for the Arts will take place every Sunday at 6 p.m. at Casino Nova

Scotia in Sydney and has a $10,000 starting jackpot. Sean Coyle, director of operations at Casino Nova Scotia, says they’re happy to be able to work with the venues, covering three different areas of Cape Breton.

“These buildings and the people who run them and use them are at the very heart of our island,” said Coyle. “They provide the spaces to foster our talented artists, welcome visitors to our communities and celebrate our culture. We want to make sure that story continues and we’re happy to be able to help.”

Chase the Ace for the Arts tickets will be available at The Savoy Theatre, The

Highland Arts Theatre and The Louisbourg Playhouse daily until 3 p.m. Tickets will be available at Casino Nova Scotia in Sydney until 5:45 p.m. the day of the draw.
