Richmond Amateur Baseball Association honours award winners, announces all-star team
The Richmond Amateur Baseball Association wrapped up its 2018 season last week with the Isle Madame Mariners capturing its first-ever league championship.
The league, based out of Richmond County, announced its annual award winners late last week, with three of recipients being from the Mariners organization including Zack Bond, Drake Boudreau and Callum Boudreau.
Bond was named the league’s most valuable player, while Drake Boudreau claimed the best pitcher award. Meanwhile, Callum Boudreau was given the playoff most valuable player award, which was voted by the league executive.
Maurice Boudreau of the Petit-de-Grat Red Caps took home the best defensive player honours, while Spencer MacNamara of the Port Hawkesbury Bucs was given the rookie of the year award. Darren Campbell (St. Peter’s) and Ryan Samson (Little Anse) were named the coaches of the year.
Richard Cotton, president of the Richmond Amateur Baseball Association, has deemed the 2018 season a success.
“Considering the weather, I thought the teams did a great job getting all of their games in,” said Cotton. “It was a very competitive league this year and the scores, for the most part, were fairly close.”
The Inverness Athletics were crowned the league’s regular season champions. The team earned the title in a one-game playoff with the Mariners after the teams finished with identical records of 12-4 in the sixteam league.
Cotton believes the highlight of the season was Callum Boudreau hitting two home runs in the league final, which helped power the Mariners to a 12-10 win over the Little Anse Hawks in the championship game on Aug. 26.
“His grandfather was Rudolf Boudreau and he was a star back in the 1950s and 1960s,” said Cotton. “To see Callum drive in five runs with the home runs was nice to see.”
The league also announced the 2018 all-star team, which included Dobson Boudreau (catcher – Isle Madame), Joel Fougere (second base – Isle Madame), Zack Bond (shortstop – Isle Madame) and Tyler Babin (third base – Little Anse). Sandy Sofan (Inverness) and Leigh Bourque (Little Anse) shared the first base honours, while Jonathan Stone (St. Peter’s), Justin Delorey (Port Hawkesbury) and Jonathan Gosbee (Inverness) were the outfielders.
