MACDONALD, Walter Leslie

-

Rest now our dear dad Blessed are the times we had...

It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of our beloved Walter Leslie MacDonald, husband, father, grandfather, greatgrandfather and brother, on September 13, 2018 at Parkstone Enhanced Care, Halifax. Leslie was born March 3, 1932, the son of Ernest and Susan (Leamon) MacDonald of Burnt Islands, NL.

Leslie began working as a fisherman at a very young age on the eastern coast of Newfoundland. He met his wife of 63 years, Emily Butler, in Burnt Islands. When they married in 1955, they crossed the Gulf to settle in Louisbourg where they raised their family. Leslie went on to work on a freighter, sailing to many places such as Venezuela. He did off shore fishing including sword fishing (in which he was an accurate striker), worked with Imperial Oil, and lastly was a self-employed inshore fisherman until his retirement in 1995. After retiring he enjoyed hunting, lake fishing, getting together with friends for a card game, and camping in the northern peninsula of NL and around Cape Breton Island. The joys of retirement were cut short when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1999. Leslie shared his love of his family with his love of the sea, knowing the waters around Louisbourg like the back of his hand.

Leslie is survived by his devoted wife, Emily; his children, Shane (Ruby), Lower Sackville, Gary (Ann Elizabeth), George’s River and Wendy (Steve) Campbellcroft, ON; brother, Percy (Meg), Halifax; sisterin-law, Christine MacDonald, Port aux Basques, NL; his five grandchildren, Jacqueline, Elizabeth, Alycia, Eric and Brett; his six greatgrandchildren, Daniel, Shane, Hope, Titus, Lydia and Abigail; his many nieces and nephews; his very special aunt, Evelyn Leamon, Burnt Islands, NL.

He was predeceased by his parents; his sisters, Sadie (Keeping), Elizabeth (Duckworth), and brother, Robert.

The family would like to thank Dr. Clarke and the staff of Parkstone, Halifax and Harbourstone, Sydney for all their care of Leslie.

Cremation has taken place. Family and friends gathered for prayers with Reverend Art Nash at Snow’s Funeral Home Chapel, Halifax on Sunday, September 16. Sail on, sail on...

Upon the waters oh so blue Where the sunrises and sunsets

Continue to comfort you May we all meet again upon the rocky shores

Embrace and live on together

Where grieving will be no more.
