Health care rally needs support

-

Recently, a doctor left Cape Breton for Ontario because the Nova Scotia Health Authority could not give her part-time work here.

Since she only wanted part-time work she was hoping to assist one of the many doctors with a busy practice.

Last week we were told that a Baddeck doctor is leaving after only two years here for Prince Edward Island. She wants to start a family and was overwhelmed with an 80-hour work week.

If the first doctor had been allowed to help the second, both would have had what they wanted and we would still have them in our area. Nova Scotians should be demanding that this provincial health authority explain why their policies are allowing this to happen. It operates in secrecy, its meetings are closed to the public and now we learn their two top recruiters have left.

Did they quit? Were they fired? We probably will never know.

Local MLAs Eddie Orrell and Tammy Martin have been non-stop in the legislature trying to get answers from Health Minister Randy Delorey.

Tammy is the only MLA that has had the courage to support a group I am a member of - Nova Scotians for Equalization Fairness.

She is organizing a health care rally this Sunday (2-4 p.m.) at the New Waterford Legion on Plummer Ave. next to the credit union and she needs all of us that are unhappy with our health care to show support and attend.

Even if you don’t live in New Waterford it is only a short drive to show this government Cape Bretoners demand respect.

Shortly after Tammy had been kicked out of the Legislature she pleaded with Delorey to attend her rally and speak to the people.

He didn’t have the decency to say a simple no. Instead, he sprouted off the same old talking points about how lucky we are for Halifax’s plan to fix our health care.

They refuse to come here, explain the plan, give us details, timelines or even consult with our health professionals. Yet we are to blindly believe they have our best interest at heart.

I feel this is not a government for the people but a dictatorship.

No matter what your politics let’s support Tammy this weekend and let Halifax know we are not sheep here in Cape Breton. Terry Charlene MacKay Sydney
