Cape Breton beaches make the grade

Meat Cove, Ingonish among Top 50 beaches in North America

Cape Breton Post - - CAPE BRETON -

Two Cape Breton locales have made a list of the Top 50 beaches in North America, according to a survey of 1,200 writers, editors and travel agents.

The beach at Meat Cove and Ingonish Beach were two of the four Nova Scotia destinations to make the grade, a list compiled by Canadian-owned online travel agency flightnet

Meat Cove was the top Nova Scotia beach listed at No. 14. The website described it as a “beach that exudes rustic charm” as the most northerly settlement in Nova Scotia.

“Camping is a popular way to enjoy this beach as there is a grassy camping area looking over the beach and popular trails that lead to stunning overlooks,” the

website said.

It was rated high for its “sheer untouched beauty” and remoteness.

The popular Ingonish Beach in the Cape Breton Highlands National Park was listed at No. 35.

It gets top marks for its sand

and water quality and according to the website, “(it) has everything you need for a day relaxing on the soft, white sands including a change house, washrooms, and a hiking trail on site.”

On the website, Los Angelesbased travel writer Bailey Gaddis said the “picturesque beach on a warm stretch of water is one of the very best that Nova Scotia has to offer.”

The beach, however, only gets a six-out-of-10 for “sheer untouched beauty” and a seven for remoteness — two elements that were a big part of the rating system that also included annual days of sunshine and average annual temperature.

The two other Nova Scotia beaches to make the list were No. 16 Crystal Crescent Beach, which is located south of Sambro in the Halifax Regional Municipality, and at No. 38, Carters Beach in Port Mouton, near Liverpool on the South Shore.

The top destination on the list is Tulum Beach on the Mayan Riviera in Mexico.

Meat Cove in Inverness County made the list of North America’s top 50 beaches according to Flight Network.
