Capers’ Brown named U Sports fe­male ath­lete of the month for Novem­ber

SYD­NEY – Hannah Brown of the Cape Bre­ton Capers women’s bas­ket­ball team was named the U Sports fe­male ath­lete of the month for Novem­ber on Fri­day.

The six-foot-one for­ward from North Syd­ney av­er­aged 28.6 points per game, which cur­rently leads At­lantic Univer­sity Sport and U Sports. Brown’s AUS-lead­ing field goal per­cent­age of 55.8 is also third-best in U Sports. In seven games this sea­son, the fifth-year busi­ness stu­dent has amassed 200 points, lead­ing the Capers’ into the Christ­mas break with an un­de­feated 7-0 record.

Roy­als down Pan­thers in high school bas­ket­ball ac­tion

GLACE BAY — Riverview High School picked up a pair of wins in Cape Bre­ton High School Bas­ket­ball League ac­tion on Thurs­day.

In boys ac­tion, the Roy­als downed the Pan­thers 101-57 at Glace Bay High School. Josh Crocker, Coby Tun­ni­cliff and Dy­lan Quirk each posted 17 points for the vis­i­tors.

Nolan Par­sons had a game-high 32 points for the Pan­thers. Kee­gan MacPhee chipped in with 18 points for the home team.

In girls ac­tion, the Roy­als de­feated the Pan­thers 75-44.

Hai­ley MacLeod, who re­cently com­mit­ted to the Cape Bre­ton Capers women’s bas­ket­ball team for the 2019-2020 sea­son, had a game­high 17 points for Riverview. Mad­die Cole­man added 15 points. Kassie MacKin­non scored seven points for the Pan­thers.

Min­ers, Ea­gles, Is­lan­ders, Cougars on home ice this week­end

SYD­NEY – Four lo­cal hockey teams will be on home ice this week­end in their re­spec­tive league play.

In Nova Sco­tia Junior Hockey League ac­tion, the Kameron Min­ers will host the Cum­ber­land County Blues, Satur­day at 7:30 p.m. at the Membertou Sport and Well­ness Cen­tre.

The Eska­soni Ea­gles will host the Blues on Sun­day at 2 p.m. at the Dan K. Stevens Me­mo­rial Arena in Eska­soni.

In Nova Sco­tia Eastlink Ma­jor Mid­get Hockey League ac­tion, the Cape Bre­ton West Is­lan­ders will play the Weeks Ma­jor Mid­gets on Satur­day at 6 p.m. at the Al MacIn­nis Sports Cen­tre in Port Hood.

In Nova Sco­tia Ma­jor Ban­tam Hockey League ac­tion this week­end, the Joneljim Cougars will host the No­vas of Antigo­nish on Satur­day at 7:15 p.m. at the Emera Cen­tre North­side in North Syd­ney.
