Capers’ Brown named U Sports female athlete of the month for November
SYDNEY – Hannah Brown of the Cape Breton Capers women’s basketball team was named the U Sports female athlete of the month for November on Friday.
The six-foot-one forward from North Sydney averaged 28.6 points per game, which currently leads Atlantic University Sport and U Sports. Brown’s AUS-leading field goal percentage of 55.8 is also third-best in U Sports. In seven games this season, the fifth-year business student has amassed 200 points, leading the Capers’ into the Christmas break with an undefeated 7-0 record.
Royals down Panthers in high school basketball action
GLACE BAY — Riverview High School picked up a pair of wins in Cape Breton High School Basketball League action on Thursday.
In boys action, the Royals downed the Panthers 101-57 at Glace Bay High School. Josh Crocker, Coby Tunnicliff and Dylan Quirk each posted 17 points for the visitors.
Nolan Parsons had a game-high 32 points for the Panthers. Keegan MacPhee chipped in with 18 points for the home team.
In girls action, the Royals defeated the Panthers 75-44.
Hailey MacLeod, who recently committed to the Cape Breton Capers women’s basketball team for the 2019-2020 season, had a gamehigh 17 points for Riverview. Maddie Coleman added 15 points. Kassie MacKinnon scored seven points for the Panthers.
Miners, Eagles, Islanders, Cougars on home ice this weekend
SYDNEY – Four local hockey teams will be on home ice this weekend in their respective league play.
In Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League action, the Kameron Miners will host the Cumberland County Blues, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre.
The Eskasoni Eagles will host the Blues on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Dan K. Stevens Memorial Arena in Eskasoni.
In Nova Scotia Eastlink Major Midget Hockey League action, the Cape Breton West Islanders will play the Weeks Major Midgets on Saturday at 6 p.m. at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre in Port Hood.
In Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League action this weekend, the Joneljim Cougars will host the Novas of Antigonish on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at the Emera Centre Northside in North Sydney.
