Capers basketball topple Reds

FREDERICTO­N, N.B. — The Cape Breton Capers women’s basketball team wrapped up a successful weekend visit to Fredericto­n with a 72-63 win over the host New Brunswick Reds on Saturday. The Capers, who also defeated the Reds on Friday, received a game-high 24-point performanc­e from Monique Calliste to improve their record to an Atlantic University Sport conference­leading 9-1, a mark they share with the UPEI Panthers.

Hannah Brown and Mackenzee Ryan each scored 14 points, while Madison Munro hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds. Meanwhile, the Capers men earned a measure of revenge as they upended their UNB counterpar­ts 91-80 on Saturday after falling 83-70 to the hosts the previous day.

Osman Omar paced Cape Breton with 32 points, while Eugene Kankue came off the bench to snag 20 points. Paul Watson pulled down a game-high 11 boards. The Capers are now 5-5, but more importantl­y have 16 points thanks to winning three four-point games. They sit third in the eight-school conference.
