MacKIN­NON, Mary Geral­dine ‘Boots’

It is with heavy hearts that we, the fam­ily, an­nounce the pass­ing of Mary Geral­dine ‘Boots’ MacKin­non. Geral­dine passed away sur­rounded by her lov­ing fam­ily at the New Water­ford Con­sol­i­dated Hos­pi­tal on Jan­uary 12, 2019. Born in New Water­ford on March 1, 1931 she was the daugh­ter to the late Charles and Nel­lie (Ratch­ford) Boutilier of River Ryan.

Geral­dine grad­u­ated in 1951, from the New Water­ford Gen­eral Hos­pi­tal nurs­ing pro­gram. She be­gan her nurs­ing ca­reer work­ing as a Cap­tain with the Cana­dian Air Force in Clin­ton On­tario and then re­turned to New Water­ford where she worked as a reg­is­tered nurse in the ma­ter­nity depart­ment as­sist­ing in the de­liv­ery of many ba­bies in the area.

Spend­ing time with her fam­ily was the most im­por­tant thing in her life. ‘Granny’ as she was lov­ingly known by all, was a self­less per­son and was most happy with a house full of grand­chil­dren that she en­joyed shar­ing sto­ries with. Through­out her life, her fa­ther was deeply in­volved in horse rac­ing as well as her hus­band Peter, who passed the tra­di­tion on to their son Peter and grand­son War­ren. She took part in many con­ver­sa­tions about horses and horse rac­ing and was al­ways sup­port­ive. She was in­ducted into the Cape Bre­ton Horse­man’s As­so­ci­a­tion Honorary Hall of Fame in 2013.

She was an avid reader and after los­ing her vi­sion she lis­tened to many au­dio­books on her au­dio reader both pro­vided by the CNIB.

Geral­dine was mar­ried to the late Peter MacKin­non and is sur­vived by her lov­ing chil­dren, Kim (Billy) Ka­vanaugh, Kelly (Michael) Tim­mons and Peter (Mar­i­lyn) MacKin­non, along with her beloved grand­chil­dren, Jar­rett, Shane, Cody, Nikki, Alyssa, War­ren, Vin­cent and Daniel, and her great-grand­chil­dren, Jack, Luke, Poppy and Wes­ley. Also sur­viv­ing is her sis­ter, Anna Abra­ham; brother, Ray­mond Boutilier, along with many nieces and neph­ews.

Be­sides her par­ents, she was also pre­de­ceased by her hus­band, Peter; brother, Rus­sell Boutilier, and sis­ter, Leona Burke.

Spe­cial thanks to Dr. Azer and the amaz­ing staff of the New Water­ford Con­sol­i­dated Hos­pi­tal Emer­gency Depart­ment and Sec­ond Floor for their ex­cel­lent and com­pas­sion­ate care.

Vis­i­ta­tion is Tues­day, Jan­uary 15, 2019 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in McLel­lan Brothers Fu­neral Home, 3183 Plum­mer Ave., New Water­ford. The Fu­neral Mass, of­fi­ci­ated by Fr. Ray Hunt­ley, is Wed­nes­day, Jan­uary 16, 2019 at 10 a.m. in the Parish of St. Leonard. Burial in St. Michael’s ceme­tery fol­lowed by a lun­cheon at the KOC, Plum­mer Ave., all are wel­come to at­tend.
