Building Blocks focuses on thinking skills
New and old members are welcome to take part in the 4-H Building Blocks project.
Building Blocks project work requirements have changed this year as the 4-H program develops this new project area which encourages creative and critical thinking skills development.
There is an increase in this project’s enrolment this year across the Cape Breton region.
For achievement day completion, Building Block project members will be required to display three projects. Members are encouraged to select projects that are suited to their abilities, their age and the time they have available to do the work.
Members can choose to do two items from the same section however, the second one must show some advancement in learning and techniques over the first one. Any interlocking building blocks can be used however purchased building block kit designs are not permitted to be used as 4-H projects.
Areas of project exploration must fit under the following sections:
SECTION 1: Buildings
SECTION 2: Vehicles (any type of vehicle, not including power functions)
SECTION 3: Scene (park, lake, forest, other) SECTION 4: Utility (picture frames, pencil holders, other)
SECTION 5: Stop motion animation SECTION 6: Specialty item (design your own kit, items including power functions, posters, other)
For the first time this year, there will be a Building Blocks competition at county day or exhibitions for members that want to participate.
All supplies for the competition will be provided by the county organizers. Members will be given a theme or topic and will have 50 minutes to complete their design. Judging will be based on creativity, use of theme/ topic, and construction/sturdiness of design.
Top junior and senior county winners from this competition can move on to compete at 4-H Nova Scotia Provincial Show in the fall.
