GLACE BAY — Glace Bay is one of three regions in Nova Scotia being given up to $15,000 to help fund youth-led community improvement projects.

The Glace Bay Community Foundation Fund, created and operated by Bay It Forward, along with a group in Yarmouth and a group in Lunenburg, have been chosen to be a part of the RBC Future Community Challenge.

The challenge asks youth (ages 15-29) to develop, pitch and implement projects helping deal with challenges affecting their community. These can be issues like intergenerational connections, food security and environmental issues.

“Three years ago, when we formed Bay It Forward our goals were to work in a collaboration with the community; to be truthful about our challenges as a community but to challenge ourselves and the community to take action on,” said Bay It Forward chair Mike Kelloway via email.

“This fund enables youth in our community to address a problem or enhance a solution. I believe millennials are amazing and offer much.”

An information session about the campaign is being held at the Savoy Theatre tonight. Starting at 6 p.m., representatives will speak to youths, non-profit organizations and others interested in the program and answer questions. They will also give an update on Bay It Forward activities in Glace Bay.

RBC Future Community Challenge proposals must be youth-led (ages 15-29) and at least 60 per cent of the team must be within that age range. Some projects that aren’t eligible for the funding challenge are ones involving purchasing items like buildings, cars, promotional campaigns and events involving ticket selling or fundraising.
