Hard at work for a cause

Events brighten closing days of school year

- Megan Jeffery

Even though the last few weeks have been full of rain, nothing can dampen the spirits of the community of Memorial High.

With the end of the school year drawing near, students and staff are rushing to begin preparations for the eventful month of June ahead.

That is why the ‘Spring Fling’ has been such a big deal at the school. From Monday to Friday of the third week of May students got to be involved in theme week. There were plenty of days to dress up that the students were able to take advantage of to show their school spirit. At the end of the week students had lunch when the student council sold barbecue hot dogs in the parking lot.

However, there are days where some students and staff want to tear their hair out. Early in the month of May, a fire alarm went off. Thankfully there was no danger or anything life threatening. Yet most people don’t want to be called out of class for no reason, especially when hard at work. After standing outside on the sunny but not so warm day, many were annoyed and curious at the disruption.

During the last full week of May, the Spring Talent Show and Lip Sync battle will occur. The performers and jokers will take the stage at the end of the week. A shoutout goes to all who will participate and the best of luck. We are sure they will blow everyone away as they always do.

One class in particular has been putting their all their efforts into charity. Mr. Thompson’s grade 9 citizenship class has organized numerous fundraisers. One day the students of those classes were told to choose a cause to support. After the students brainstormed various ideas they chose the local food bank. They have been working alone and beside the student council on certain occasions ever since. A few of their fundraisers include a staff 50/50 and a food drive. They will be also helping out with the talent show and have more events planned.

Next on the list is safe grad. It’s an event that happens once a year where the graduates are able to have one last night at the school with their close friends. Students in the graduating class have been given forms to sign and hand back to the supervisor with the fee of $10. May 27 is the last day they will be accepting the forms. Students are required to have their t-shirt size listed so that they can be ordered as soon as possible. Hopefully the turn out will be large and grand and that the attendees will enjoy themselves to the fullest.

Lastly, an important moment was captured on frame. The 2019 grad photo was taken by Warren Gordon. All of the grade 12 students gathered on the gymnasium bleachers besides their new and old friends. It is a moment that will be remembered.

With prom as the next huge event around the corner, many students are excited to experience the night where they can dance till their feet ache.
