Roadwork season underway

SYDNEY — Let the roadwork begin.

In what has become an unofficial harbinger of warmer weather, the road construction and maintenance season is now upon us.

The Cape Breton Regional Municipality has announced that roadwork operations began on Monday at four different locations across the region.

In Sydney, work crews are on Christopher Crescent from Cottage Road to civic address 83, while across town work has stared on Webster Street, from Victoria Road to Bay Street, in Whitney Pier.

In New Waterford, crews are on Warren Avenue from Gibbon Street to the railroad tracks and on Brook Avenue from Bay Avenue to Irish Brook Road.

A municipality-issued news release also stated that traffic control will be in place at the various work sites. Passersby are asked to respect the current COVID-19 protocols and are encouraged not to approach the workers and to follow all social distancing guidelines.

Meanwhile, the CBRM is also reminding residents that while the municipal waste management facility on Spar Road ropened to the public on Tuesday, social distancing measures remain in effect at the site.

The public is also reminded that there may be delays in getting access to the facility as only a limited number of vehicles will be permitted on the grounds at one time and that garbage should be kept at home if it can be safely stored so as to reduce lineups at the landfill.

The number of garbage bags allowed for weekly curbside collection is now back to five with residents permitted to use two dark bags.

And, CBRM residents are once again reminded that heavy garbage remains postponed and that such items are not to be placed curbside.
