Creative ways to pamper mom

Mother’s Day provides us all with an opportunity to honour the special women in our lives, but this year will be different for many of us due to COVID-19 social distancing measures.

We may not be able to physically be with our mothers on May 10, but we can still take the time to reach out and show our love and appreciation by calling, FaceTiming, and sending thoughtful cards and notes. You can even trace outstretched arms onto a piece of paper and “mail a hug,”

For children living at home, there are many creative ways they can pamper their special ladies. Handmade cards and gifts are my personal favourites. Consider having little ones fill out a “Mom Questionnaire” or make a “10 Things I Love About Mom” list. Heartfelt cards and notes mean a lot to moms, and they make excellent keepsakes.

Painting unique artwork to share is a wonderful way for a child to get creative and make something special to give to his/her mom. Kids can craft a cheerful Mother’s Day painting by putting a heart in the middle of a canvas, painting around the heart with bright colours, removing the heart to reveal the white canvas underneath, and using a Sharpie to write “Mom” in the centre of the heart. Children’s artwork makes fantastic sentimental décor at home or at the office. Painted rocks with “Mom, You ROCK!” messages are fun too.

Moms love flowers, too, but if a trip to the flower shop is not possible this year, homemade flowers are the perfect solution. Younger kids can make flowers with whatever craft supplies are in the craft cupboard (think paper, popsicle sticks, crayons, markers, stickers, tissue paper and/or felt).

Older kids can make flowers by hot gluing handmade pom poms onto sticks or dowels (for a step-by-step pom pom tutorial, visit www. EastCoastMommy.com website. They are super-easy and fun to make).

Edible bouquets are a wonderful option too. Kids can make a cupcake bouquet by placing a Styrofoam ball in a cup, inserting toothpicks into the Styrofoam, and sticking cupcakes onto the toothpicks. Mini chocolate bars hot glued onto skewers or Timbits inserted into skewers can also be turned into festive bouquets. Just secure the bottoms of the skewers together with an elastic and wrap them up in tissue paper to create an edible “flower” arrangement.

The way to a mom’s heart may actually be through her stomach, so serving her breakfast in bed or making her favourite meal or dessert might be exactly what she wants. Just make sure you clean up all the mess after you are finished in the kitchen. No mom wants extra work on her special day.

Mother’s Day provides the perfect chance to give moms a much-deserved break ... without having to leave the house. Kids can make coupons for mom to redeem for household chores, or they can provide her with quiet time to have a bath, watch a movie, or read a book.

There are many creative ways to pamper moms at home this Mother’s Day. Give her a day off, spend time together, shower her with homemade gifts and treats, and smother her with hugs and kisses. Happy Mother’s Day.
