Sydney Academy students face charges.

SYDNEY — Cape Breton Regional Police have charged two youth following an assault that landed an 18-yearold in hospital with facial injuries.

In an email response to questions from the Cape Breton Post, spokesperson Desiree Magnus said Cape Breton Regional Police responded to a call from Sydney Academy high school staff Wednesday morning regarding a report of an assault.

"On arrival, officers learned the 18-year-old victim had come into the school injured, reporting he had been outside with a group of students on Terrace Street and two of the students in the group had assaulted him," Magnus said.

The injured student's parents were notified and they took him to hospital where he was treated for facial injuries. The Post has confirmed the victim is still in hospital and has suffered damage to his teeth and has a fractured jaw.

Magnus said two students, both aged 15, were arrested and they cannot be named because of their age. They were each charged with robbery with violence and assault causing bodily harm. They were released from police custody on a promise to appear in Sydney provincial court on Feb. 7.

In a written statement, the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education confirmed there was an "alleged altercation outside Sydney Academy" and that police were called.

Citing privacy concerns, spokesperson Heather Calder said the centre for education couldn't provide more details but confirmed they were following the Provincial School Code of Conduct Policy and would be taking "appropriate actions."
