SYDNEY — The Sydney Speedway plans to expand its roster of divisions and schedule for the 2021 racing season.

The Grand Lake Road facility is expecting to feature 10 to 12 races between May and October. The schedule will be released at a later date.

The expanded roster and schedule will open opportunities for track champions to be crowned in a minimum of three divisions, which will mark the first time since 2015 the facility will award seasonlong championships.

Like previous years, several special events will return to the 2021 calendar. Following the success of the Halloween Spooktacular event in late October that feature increased payouts in both the Mini Stock and Legend divisions, a focus on local grassroots racing will anchor the 2021 season.

The grassroots events will run every two to three weeks during the season with the returning mini stock and street stock divisions scheduled for each card.

In addition, the newly announced six-cylinder thunder division will be a regular division with a season-long championship on the line. An additional division for the program is being discussed and is expected to be announced at a later date.

The Late Model Sportsman, Legend and Bandolero classes will spotlight select events on the local season schedule in 2021.

The schedule is slated to include at minimum two invitational events as have been seen over the past two seasons. The aforementioned Late Model Sportsman, Legend, Bandolero and Mini Stock classes have headlined these special races and are expected to do the same in the coming year.

Two Demolition Derby features are expected to be contested in 2021. The most recent Demolition Derby came in October 2020 when more than 30 cars showed up to smash their way to the front in the Dawn Campbell Memorial Derby.

Should COVID-19 restrictions and weather permit, Sydney Speedway is also considering a winter or spring endurance event.

The track is looking at delegating a local management team to oversee and grow the regular point racing program into 2021 and beyond. For more information on marketing at Sydney Speedway or to apply to be a part of the Sydney Speedway team, contact Greg Dowe at greg@ sydneyspeedway.ca.
