Choir looks for singing miners
SYDNEY — The Men of the Deeps coal miners chorus is looking for a few good singers.
The men’s choir hopes to soon audition new members who will eventually perform with the group when it is able to safely return to the stage.
"Since COVID stopped our regular schedule, we're trying to make use of the time to enhance the group by training some new voices,” said conductor and business manager Stephen Muise.
The Men of the Deeps have not gathered together except for a few socially-distant, masked meetings and smaller sectional rehearsals since March 2020.
In 2019, the group had just finished a highly successful Christmas tour when they were approached by another promoter for a southern Ontario tour in the fall of 2020. Those plans along with the idea to take on another full CD project were stopped because of the pandemic.
To audition, submit an application. They are available for download on the Men of the Deeps website or from members of the group's executive. Once the application is approved, audition dates, times and other details will be set with individuals. Successful applicants will be invited to perform one song of their choice, in a safe, socially-distanced environment.
In addition to singing, those applying must keep in mind one more requirement to become a member.
“All applicants should have at least two years of experience in or around a coal mine,” said group president John MacLeod.
You must apply by March 7. Download an application at menofthedeeps. com (under the CONTACT heading) or call John MacLeod (Glace Bay) at 902-565-5297 or Ernie Kliza (New Waterford) at 902-578-0559.
