ESKASONI – Police are staying tight-lipped about an ongoing search for the shooter of Eskasoni First Nation resident Leonard Denny.

The 53-year-old chief executive officer of Crane Cove Seafoods was shot through the window of his home late Sunday night and was taken to the hospital with non-lifethreatening injuries. He continues to recover in hospital.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Mark Skinner says police are continuing to investigate and would not say whether they have any suspects or anyone in custody.

A woman in Eskasoni says police investigating the shooting removed property from her home without her permission.

The woman says she allowed police to enter her home on Thursday to view recordings caught on her home security system.

She says she was co-operating, but when police wanted to take the unit with them she refused and demanded they come back with a warrant.

She says the plain-clothed officers then forcefully confiscated the video recorder and left in unmarked vehicles.

The woman says she is in the process of filing a formal complaint with the RCMP.

Both Cpl. Skinner and Eskasoni Chief Leroy Denny declined to comment on the incident.

According to the Canadian Criminal Code, officers that are "lawfully present in a place pursuant to a warrant or otherwise in the execution of duties may, without a warrant, seize anything that the officer believes on reasonable grounds will afford evidence in respect of an offence against this or any other Act of Parliament."

Chief Denny, in a Facebook post on Eskasoni's community page, asked his community to "be respectful and not point any fingers at individuals."

Denny says there is an increased police presence in the area and that anyone with information is asked to contact police at 902-379-2822, or Nova Scotia Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
