HENNESSEY, Kevin Joseph North Sydney

-

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kevin Joseph Hennessey on Thursday, March 4, 2021. Kevin was born in Reserve Mines to the late Catherine Hennessey-morrison. On May 18, 1963, he married his wife of 58 years, Leona (Gouthro). Together they had three daughters, Karen (Richard) Foss, Kate (Kevin) Roland, Sheila Hennessey, and one son, (and best friend), Bobby Hennessey (Maxine). He was a wonderful Papa to eleven grandchildren; Stephanie (Kevin), Kelsey, Jessica, Mitchell, Noah, Emma, Natasha, Olivia, Joshua, Reilly, and Sophia; and to three greatgrandchildren; Iris, Andre and Teddy. Kevin was a miner in his younger years before studying to become a Steamfitter and Pipefitter. He was a proud member of the local Steamfitters and Pipefitters Union Local 682 for over 50 years. For most of his life, Kevin worked in and traveled for the construction industry across Canada, where his strong work-ethic was evident. Kevin was very smart man, who could have meaningful conversations on any topic, yet was quiet, unassuming and humble. He was known to drop everything to help those in need. He was fiercely proud of and loyal to his family and friends. Kevin had a great love of the outdoors, especially hunting, gardening, and fishing with Mick, Bob, and his nephews. Kevin loved Cape Breton music and enjoyed having a nip to a good fiddle tune. He always had a good story to tell and had a wonderfully dry wit. He is also survived by his step-sister, Catherine Nicholson and step-brother, Neil Morrison; his brother-in-law, Mick Mccormick; and three sistersin-law, Theresa Gillis, Sister Marcella Gouthro and Evelyn Gouthro. Besides his mother, Kevin was predeceased by two sisters, Ann Macdonald and Margaret Rambeau and by brothers/sisters-in-law, Mike and Beth Gouthro; Frank Gouthro; Hilda Mccormick, Jennie Silver, and George Nicholson. The family would like to thank the entire Cancer Care team for the care given to Kevin during his illness. There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Reverend Father Doug Macdonald officiating. Covid-19 restrictions regarding the wearing of masks, social distancing, and limited seating in the church will be in place. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cape Breton Cancer Centre. Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.wjdooley.com.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our beloved wife and mother at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Sunday, February 28, 2021, from respiratory complications arising from cancer. Velma was born November 29, 1952, in Sydney. She is survived by her cherished husband of 45 years, Dan; son, Cody, Sydney; daughter, Mallory (Emil Nygard), South Bar; and her mother, Chris Chiasson, Sydney. Also survived by her brothers, John (Cathie) Chiasson and Roger (Ann Marie) Chiasson, both of Sydney; Aunt Hattie Macaskill; Uncle “Beaver” John Macaskill and Uncle Murdock (Marilyn) Macaskill; as well as the many cousins, nieces and nephews she loved so much. She was predeceased by her father, Pat Chiasson. Velma grew up in Sydney where she met Dan and married in 1976. Soon thereafter, they moved to the North End of Sydney where they had Mallory and Cody, then finally settling on St. Peters Rd., where they resided most recently. Velma’s greatest joy was her family. She worked tirelessly at making a wonderful home for them while always taking time to love and care for her entire extended family. Known especially for her generosity, anyone who knew Velma could tell you about her thoughtful cards and little gifts that would cheer you up, right when you needed it. Velma also loved to spend time in her volunteer ministry where many met her. She was always sharing positive thoughts of love and hope whenever she could. Velma had great faith in, and her family takes great comfort from, the Bible’s promise at Revelation 21:4 of a time when there will be no more pain, sorrow, or death here on earth. We know Velma is secure now in God’s memory until that time. The family would like to thank Velma’s doctor of many years, Dr. James Mackillop, as well as Dr. Wissam Saliba, her oncologist, whose kindness and care gave her great comfort. Also, thank you to all the doctors, nurses and staff at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their outstanding care and professionalism. There will be no visitation. A private family memorial service will be held at Sydney Memorial Chapel. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
