SYDNEY — The rollout for the COVID-19 vaccine for people ages 80 and over begins today and continues Wednesday at the Canada Games Complex in Sydney.

“I'm anxious to get mine but fell short of the age group by two months,” said Vernna MacNeil, 79, of Sydney. “It's OK, I'm happy it's coming and I know I'll be next. I'm anxious to get that peace of mind, although I won't stop wearing a mask until there's no such thing as COVID anymore.”

Nova Scotia's immunization plan is a phased approach, following the advice of the national advisory committee on recommendations for vaccine rollout.

In this phase, Nova Scotians can receive the vaccine by age group — organized in five-year increments. Currently appointments are being booked for those ages 80 and over.

Nova Scotia plans to have vaccines available to at least 75 per cent of the population by the end of September. Every person in Nova Scotia who wants the COVID-19 vaccine will receive it free of charge.

Marla MacInnis, spokesperson for the Department of Health and Wellness, said medical officials say age is the biggest risk factor for severe illness and death from COVID19 and the vaccination rollout will continue to prioritize vaccinations by age.

MacInnis said the province will have several models of delivery as part of its approach to ensure all Nova Scotians have access to the vaccine. Until they are able to immunize those who are unable to travel to receive their vaccine in the community, those who support them will have an opportunity to receive the vaccine based on their immunization plan.

“Those that aren't mobile and can't get to the vaccine will have greater protection when those around them get vaccinated,” she said. “When a plan is in place for those who cannot travel for the vaccine, it will be communicated publicly.”

MacInnis said more information will be coming soon on the AstraZeneca vaccine and rollout.
