Westmount, It is with deep, deep sadness that the family of Roderick Blaise MacArthur announce his passing on June 1, 2021, at the Northside General Hospital. Born on February 2, 1936, Roddie was the son of the late John J. and Elizabeth (MacMullin) MacArthur. He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Judy. His children, Beth Keough, Kim MacArthur, Kevin (Florence) MacArthur, Troy (Bianca) MacArthur, and Jody MacArthur (James McKee). Also surviving are 11 grandchildren: Erin, Jordan & Jillian Keough; Jamie & Shawn Tiller; Jared MacArthur; Connor, Sydney & Brody MacArthur; and Kate & Maddie McKee. Also mourning his death are his 8 great-grandchildren, and his siblings Anna Kehoe and John MacArthur. Roddie is survived by many special nieces and nephews, and sister-in-law, Lorraine Steele. Roddie was predeceased by his parents and brothers, Joseph, Donnie (Boo), and Sandy. The most important thing in the world to Roddie was his family and he was happiest when he was surrounded by his loved ones. Roddie, also known as Bampi, wore many hats in his lifetime but he excelled as a husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was the chief storyteller and journal writer in our family. We are thankful for the memories he recorded over the years. He and Judy always said to be good to your family because they are your biggest accomplishment in life. Another important part of Roddie’s life was giving back to his community and helping those in need. A municipal Councillor for 18 years, he served the residents of Westmount, Point Edward, Edwardsville and area with the County of Cape Breton and then the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. A lifelong volunteer, Roddie spent his life serving others with a variety of organizations. He was an active member of Holy Rosary Parish serving as both Lector and Eucharistic Server for many years. He was a founding member, 4th degree knight and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Moses M. Coady Council 9476. He was a proud member of the Kiwanis of Cape Breton Golden K. A born organizer and leader, Roddie was instrumental in the creation of the Canada Day celebrations at Petersfield Park in Westmount. He was an honourary member of the Westmount Volunteer Fire Department after years of active service. He spent most of his career on the railway at Sydney Steel Corporation. Known as the voice of stock car racing in Sydney – first at Midway Speedway, Bud’s Speedway, Sydney Speedway and then Island Speedway – Roddie, or “Motor Mouth” as he was known, will always be remembered for his unique sayings. “These are the bulldogs.” “What a revolting development this is!” “And away we go!” He had a nickname for every driver on the track. Roddie and Judy loved spending their summers at Ben Eoin Beach Campground. Family (and friends who became family) will remember Roddie for his dedication to the Ben Eoin Open and for his campfire lighting skills. He was always first at the firepit and many memories were made at this special place. He was an avid sports fan especially of the Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs, golf, and the Cape Breton Oilers and Eagles hockey teams. Roddie was a humble man who was as down to earth as they come. He took great pride in his property on Westmount Road and spent hours on his lawnmower cutting the grass. He was a lover of dogs, and will be remembered for touring around Westmount in his Ranger truck with his dog. They were known as Jake and the Fat Man! Those who wish to make a donation in Roddie’s memory, please consider donating to the following organizations in his memory: IWK Health Centre or the Circle of Care Campaign Hospice Residence. There will be no visitation or service at this time. We will have a celebration of life when COVID-19 restrictions allow. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at twcurry.com. Although the main branch in our family tree has fallen, and our branches grow in many directions, our roots will keep us all together. We are here to carry on Roddie’s legacy.
