It is with broken hearts that we, the family of Michael George Maroun, regret to announce his passing on Tuesday, June 8, 2021, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital in Sydney, with his family by his side. Born October 2, 1953, in Sydney, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Frampton) Maroun. A lifelong resident of Sydney, Michael has been a fixture in the local business community throughout his career. From government, private, and not-for-profit sectors, to ultimately owing his own business, he was a community-minded man who dedicated many hours to numerous charitable and business endeavors. He sat on a variety of boards, committees, and organizations at municipal, provincial, federal, and international levels. Michael was always generous with a smile, a kind word, a caring gesture, or a quick wit. His love for spending time and travelling with Cathy was outmatched only by his love of spending time with his precious granddaughters. Since pandemic travel restrictions hit, the highlight of his day was having virtual breakfast chats with his little girls, and virtual visits in the “jamma closet” as they got ready to start their days. There are many words that can be used to describe Michael, but one dear friend summed it up best, saying he was a “gentlemen’s gentleman.” He will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure and honour of knowing him. Michael is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Catherine “Cathy” (Macmullin); daughter, Cheryl (Andrew) Mercer, Ottawa; son, Shaun, Sydney; granddaughters, Lila and Paige Mercer; brothers, Lou (Kathryn), Bermuda and Gary (Beverly), Sydney; nephews, Derek, Kyle and Steven; niece, Amber; and many extended family members and close friends. Cremation has taken place. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sydney Memorial Chapel and are incomplete at this time. Memorials in Michael’s name may be made to the Cancer Patient Care Fund at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
