MacPherson, Tunnicliff named MVPs

SYDNEY — Chloe MacPherson and Coby Tunnicliff were named the Cape Breton High School Basketball League most valuable players for the 2020-21 season.

The league announced the awards virtually on Monday.

MacPherson suited up for New Waterford's Breton Education Centre girls team, averaging 11.5 points per game while scoring 115 points in 10 regular season contests. The Lingan product is a Cape Breton University soccer recruit.

Tunnicliff led the Riverview

boys team, averaging 19.7 points per game while netting 177 points in nine games, following his return to the Coxheath school from Rothesay Netherwood School in New Brunswick. The Sydney River product was recruited by the CBU men's basketball program earlier this year.

The defensive player of the year awards were presented to Carter Brown of Breton Education Centre and Christina Thomas of Memorial in Sydney Mines.

Brown, a New Waterford native, was third on the Bears in points (156) and averaged 13 points per game. As for Thomas, a North Sydney product, she led the Marauders

in points (173) and averaged 15.7 points per game. Thomas is a CBU women's basketball recruit.

Cameron Clarke of Memorial and Gabe MacPhee of Sydney Academy captured rookie of the year honours.

Clarke finished the 202021 campaign with 97 points while averaging 8.8 points per game. Meanwhile, MacPhee wrapped up the season with 82 points while averaging 6.8 points per game.

Glace Bay's Anna Gillis was presented the Carol Ann Guy Memorial Award. The award is in memory of Carol Ann Guy, who played at Memorial and is presented annually to a player who demonstrat­es determinat­ion, dedication and courage.

On the hardwood, Gillis finished the season with 79 points while average 7.2 points per game.

Along with the award winners, the league also announced its all-star teams.

Anthony Lecky (Riverview), Ben Kearny (Breton Education Centre), Ethan MacNeil (Breton Education Centre), Gareth MacKinnon (Riverview) and Jhermaine Olat (Sydney Academy) were named to the boys first allstar team.

The second all-star team featured Andrew Boutilier (Glace Bay), Jeremy O'Quinn (Breton Education Centre), Koby Carroll (Memorial), Mykah Hill (Riverview) and

Niko Kachafanas (Sydney Academy).

Meanwhile, the girls first all-star team included Abby Parago (Riverview), Abby Cameron (Glace Bay), Amy Kublek (Memorial), Emmy Donovan (Breton Education Centre) and Makayla MacDonald (Glace Bay).

Kayl Ryan (Glace Bay), Kelsie Neville (Breton Education Centre), Kylie Jessome (Memorial), Meghan MacKinnon (Breton Education Centre) and Teaonna Carroll (Riverview) were named to the girls second all-star team.

The 2021-22 Cape Breton High School Basketball League is expected to begin in the fall.
