A day for champions

Local teams set to play for Cape Breton Cup titles in New Waterford, Sydney

SYDNEY — Twelve local soccer teams have earned the right to compete for a Cape Breton championsh­ip on Saturday.

The teams, in the under-13, under-15 and under-18 divisions, will hit the field hoping to put the finishing touches on their 2021 season by winning a Cape Breton Cup title.

In the girls under-13 division, league-leading Whitney Pier (8-0-1) will play the Northside Storm (7-1-1) in the championsh­ip game at 12:30 p.m. at MacKinnon Memorial Field in New Waterford.

Whitney Pier and Northside played twice during the regular season. The teams tied 2-2 on July 23, while Whitney Pier won the most recent meeting on Aug. 9, 4-0, in North Sydney.

Meanwhile, in the boys under-13 division, Riverview and Whitney Pier as well as New Waterford and Strait Area played in the league semifinals on Wednesday, however the scores were not available at press time.

The championsh­ip game for the division will be held at 12 p.m. at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex Turf in Sydney.

Turning to the girls under15 division, the first-place Northside Storm (10-0-1) will play second-place Riverview (7-2-2) for Cape Breton’s top honour.

Northside and Riverview met three times during the regular season with the Storm winning the series 2-0-1. The last time the teams met was on Aug. 5 in North Sydney where the club’s battled to a 4-4 tie.

The championsh­ip game is slated for MacKinnon Memorial Field at 2:30 p.m.

In the boys under-15 division, the league’s undefeated Whitney Pier team (8-0-0) will play the second-place Northside Storm (2-6-0) for the Cape Breton Cup.

Whitney Pier and Northside hit the pitch for four games during the summer with Whitney Pier winning all four contests by scores of 3-1, 5-2, 9-3, and most recently last Tuesday 3-2.

The championsh­ip game will take place at 2 p.m. at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex Turf.

Switching to the girls under-18 division, the secondplac­e Riverview (4-3-3) secured its spot in the championsh­ip game with a 5-0 forfeit win over the Northside Storm (2-7-1).

In the second semifinal game, New Waterford hosted Whitney Pier Wednesday night at MacKinnon Memorial Field, however, the result was not available at press time.

The championsh­ip game will be played at 4:30 p.m. at MacKinnon Field.

Finally, in the boys under18 division, the first-place New Waterford Wolves (8-01) will battle the second-place Whitney Pier Yellow (6-3-0) in the final game of the season.

New Waterford secured its spot with a 2-1 win over Whitney Pier Blue, while Whitney Pier Yellow blanked Glace Bay 3-0 in the other semifinal, both games on Monday.

The two teams only met once during the regular season with New Waterford taking the game 6-2 on home field. The teams were scheduled to play on Aug. 6 in Sydney, but Whitney Pier forfeited the game.

The championsh­ip match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Cape Breton Health Recreation Complex Turf.

The Cape Breton Post contacted coaches Christian Fraser (U18 Boys/New Waterford), Chris MacDonald (U15 Boys/Whitney Pier), Chris Kerr (U15 Girls/Northside), and Neil Harker (U13 Girls/Whitney Pier) for comment on their respective Cape Breton Cup final games but were unable to reach them before publicatio­n.
