GILLIS, Florence Margaret 'Flossie'

New Waterford It is with saddened hearts we announce the passing of Florence Margaret 'Flossie' Gillis, age 89 , on Saturday August 28, 2021, at the Northside General Hospital , North Sydney, N.S. Flossie was born in Inverness, N.S., on October 4, 1931 to the late Dan and Catherine (MacDonald) MacIntyre. She attended school in Inverness until she moved to New Waterford with her family. Flossie attended St. Agnes High School and was a member of the girl's basketball team. She worked at the Paramount Theatre where she got to know everybody in town. It was in New Waterford that she met her husband, Ronald 'Rannie' Gillis and together they had four children. Flossie was a wonderful loving mother and grandmothe­r with a warm smile that will be missed by many. She was a person of exceptiona­l religious faith who passed this on to her children and their families. Flossie was affectiona­tely called "Ma" by the neighbourh­ood kids because of the great love and kindness she showed everyone. During her lifetime she had lived in Halifax where she managed Green Gables stores; she also lived in Antigonish, Springhill and Amherst but her heart brought her back home to Cape Breton. Although she settled in Sydney, her love for New Waterford never left. Flossie is survived by a daughter, Karen Gillis Lowe (Paul), Sydney; two sons, Joseph 'Jody' Gillis (Marina), Portage, Glen Gillis, Sydney; brother, Archie MacIntyre (Shirley), New Waterford; seven grandchild­ren, Kayleigh, Sarah, Shane, Dean, Bhreagh, Katie and Brydie. Flossie will also be missed by her loving nieces and nephews whom she loved deeply. Flossie was predecease­d by her husband, Rannie; her infant daughter, Sandy and her eldest son, Ronald 'Randy' Gillis; her sisters, Sadie, Mary, and her brothers, Fr. Doug and John D. There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place under the direction of V.J McGillivra­y Funeral Home, 380 Smith St., New Waterford. A Funeral Mass of celebratio­n will be held on Friday, September 3, 2021 at 10 a.m. in the Parish Church of St. Leonard, Mount Carmel Avenue, with Father Peter McLeod officiatin­g. Burial will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery. Limited seating at the church with Covid-19 protocols in place. As an expression of sympathy for Flossie, memorial donations in her memory may be made to The Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia.
