Sydney airport receives provincial funding

-

SYDNEY — The Nova Scotia government is injecting $6.3 million into the Sydney airport to fund infrastructure upgrades and help establish new air routes.

In a news release, the provincial government said the bulk of the funding, $5.3 million, will be used for upgrades at the airport, including repairs to the primary and secondary runways, upgrades to the main terminal and paving of the main road to the airport.

The remainder will help establish a new fund that the airport authority can use to incentivize airlines to create new routes through the airport.

Airport CEO Mike Mackinnon said the funding is a significant statement of confidence and support for the airport and Cape Breton’s tourism sector and businesses.

“The funding will enable the Sydney Airport Authority to re-engage our capital plan, which has sat idle these last two years due to the pandemic’s impact, and even more exciting, establish the $1-million Air Access Fund, which will allow us to compete for new air services as the industry recovers,” said Mackinnon.

Cape Breton East MLA Brian Comer said the funding will ensure the long-term success of the airport.

“Our airports play an important role in growing our provincial and local economies, creating good jobs and serving as essential transportation, business and tourism links,” said Comer. “On Cape Breton Island, the J.A. Douglas Mccurdy Sydney Airport is a vital regional hub that connects us to the world. This funding will help ensure the airport is positioned for long-term success.”
