The weekend is here, and there’s bright news for all four Atlantic provinces in the forecast. High-pressure over northern Québec will begin moving southward this weekend. The winds wrapping around the high and stalled low-pressure off Newfoundland and Labrador will keep us under a northerly flow.

Temperatures will generally be below seasonal on Saturday with a mix of sun and clouds for the Maritime provinces with a low chance of an isolated shower for Prince Edward Island and eastern Nova Scotia. Variable cloudiness is forecast Saturday for Newfoundland and Labrador with a chance of showers or wet flurries.

As high-pressure gets closer to our region, we can expect brighter skies across all Atlantic Canada on Mother’s Day, although temperatures will still be at or below seasonal.

You’ve likely been hearing about a warmup thanks to a large ridge of high-pressure that will develop over southern and central U.S., including from myself.

There’s a bit more uncertainty today compared to earlier in the week with how strong the upper-level ridge will be and where the surface high-pressure will end by mid-week. This ultimately will impact the amount of sunshine and how warm it will get.

This ridge will hold a lowpressure system between Cape Cod and Cape Hatteras during this time. The strength of the ridge’s position and surface high will also determine if any clouds or showers from that system drift into our region, which may be possible midweek.

Temperatures are still forecast to climb into the mid-to-high teens for most of next week, potentially in the high teens or low 20s by mid-week. Wind direction will be key as areas under the influence of an onshore wind will be cooler.

As we go through the weekend into early next week, we should get a better sense of how it will all play out.
