ACAP Cape Breton seeks four new board members
SYDNEY — ACAP Cape Breton, which for 30 years has provided environmental leadership on the island, is seeking four new board members — particularly fresh, diverse voices, the non-profit organization said in a news release.
“We’re looking for people who are passionate about the environment and who want to make a difference in their community,” acting board president Leah Noble said in a statement. “And we are hoping particularly for representation from local First Nations communities, representation from the Black/African-Nova Scotian community and newcomers, as well as representation from outside the (Cape Breton Regional Municipality). These voices are often under-represented with respect to environmental conservation, yet are so crucial to the solutions and the path forward.”
VARIETY OF SERVICES
The organization underwent a transition in the last year, with Kathleen Aikens taking on the role of executive director in May 2021.
ACAP Cape Breton began in 1992 and has since evolved into a dynamic group that integrates environmental, social and economic factors into projects focusing on action, education and ecosystem planning. ACAP offers a variety of services including handson education,, stream and habitat restoration, community cleanups and more. The non-profit employs 24 people, and also includes a group of summer interns.
“The board is an integral part of the functioning of any non-profit, and the ACAP board is an active one,” Aikens said in a statement. “With so many projects on the plate for the organization, sitting on the board is an excellent opportunity for someone who may be looking to gain that leadership and community experience, or for someone more seasoned who has experience to share. The only qualification necessary is an openness to working with a team.”
Interested people who live in Cape Breton can put their names forward for the board by Aug. 19. To apply, email board@acapcb.ns.ca with your resumé and a brief statement about why you would like to volunteer with the ACAP Cape Breton board of directors.
