Baddeck’s Germani top Cape Breton finisher

SYDNEY — The 128th annual Boston Marathon was held on Monday morning with several Cape Breton runners taking part in the prestigiou­s event.

Tyler Germani of Baddeck was the first known runner from the island to cross the finish line with a time of two hours, 48 minutes and 56 seconds, followed closely by Ian Doyle of Ben Eoin at 2:49:23 and Justin Lalanne of Sydney with a 2:53:51 finish time.

Meanwhile, Corey Deveaux of Sydney River finished the race with a time of 2:55:35 and Chris Brayley of Sydney completed the event in 3:06:27.

Kim Scattolon of Glace Bay was the first known Cape Breton female to finish the race with a time of 3:31:08.

Westmount’s John MacKinnon completed the marathon in 3:34:31, Krista Ann Starzomski of Howie Centre had a time of 3:37:07, Donna Burns of Sydney posted a 4:17:39, Kara MacKinnon, originally of Sydney and now living in Halifax, had a time of 4:25:45.

Steve Grace of Glace Bay finished the event in 4:27:19, while Steven Van Nostrand of Sydney posted a time of 4:27:26 and Ann Doyle of Sydney crossed the finish line in with a time of 4:56:08.

Overall, Sisay Lemma of

Ethiopia finished first in the marathon with a 2:06:17 time, followed by Mohamed Esa of Ethiopia at 2:06:58 and twotime defending champion Evans Chebet of Kenya at 2:07:22.

The first female runner to complete the marathon was Hellen Obiri of Kenya, who also earned that honour in 2023, with a time of 2:22:37. She was followed by fellow Kenya residents Sharon Lokedi at 2:22:45 and Edna Kiplagat at 2:23:21.

The 2025 edition of the Boston Marathon is scheduled for April 21. The qualifying window for the event began on Sept. 1, 2023. Registrati­on dates will be announced in the coming weeks.
