LOCAL JOURNALIST WILL BE MISSED
When I learned about the passing of Mary Campbell, I was shocked.
Mary was the epitome of what journalism should look like and she was always digging for the truth. Her hard work and her thorough investigative abilities at the Cape Breton Spectator shined like a beacon of light to her subscribers. She was a beacon of light to us all.
Mary left no stone uncovered when reporting on an article for the Cape Breton Spectator, a newspaper she started on her own. I was a subscriber and I loved to read her stories. I used to compare her coverage to that of Paul Harvey (“now you know the rest of the story”) because I usually learned “the rest of the story” from Mary’s articles, especially when she reported on the Cape Breton Regional Municipality or the Port of Sydney.
When fighting for our cause, the Nova Scotians for Equalization Fairness often contacted Mary to clarify some information for us or to get the full story on an issue. She always promptly replied and helped us out the best she could.
We have lost a few good residents who stood up for the CBRM and Cape Breton in the past few years – Madeline Yakimchuk, Terrance MacDonald, Wayne Krszwda and Murray Johnston just to name a few – and it is sad that we now must add Mary Campbell to that list.
It is hard to thank someone for all they have done for the community after they have passed, so we turn to their family with that message.
To Delores, Susan, Flora and Archie; those who knew Mary are deeply saddened by her passing and we wanted to thank you all for the support and care you showed Mary during her illness. Members of this community will never forget the contributions made by your amazing sister. I will forever keep her in my prayers.
