Woman arrested after crashing into Waycobah RCMP detachment

WAYCOBAH – A 24-yearold Cape Breton woman is facing several charges after she fled from police and eventually crashed into the Waycobah RCMP detachment early Thursday morning.

Inverness County District RCMP received a report of an impaired driver travelling on Highway 105 at a high rate of speed, heading towards the community of Waycobah around 2:44 a.m.

Officers learned that the driver had stolen a black Chevrolet Equinox and was heading towards the Waycobah RCMP Detachment.

An officer located the vehicle, which fled westbound on Reservation Road. A traffic stop was attempted but the driver refused to pull over.

The driver later turned the vehicle around to face the police car and drove quickly past the police vehicle, very close to the passenger side door, causing the officer to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

The driver then took off towards the Waycobah RCMP detachment at a high rate of speed, crossing the detachment’s lawn and subsequently crashing into a Nissan Micra and then the detachment itself.

The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was arrested and transported to the Port Hawkesbury RCMP detachment where she refused to provide breath samples. She was later taken to hospital by Emergency Health Services for a medical assessment.

Trinity Bernard of Waycobah has been charged with flight from a peace officer, dangerous operation of a conveyance, two counts of mischief, impaired operation of a conveyance and refusal of a demand.

Damage was sustained to the exterior and interior of the Waycobah RCMP detachment but it remains open.

RCMP say the investigation is ongoing.
