Owen Hurcum

-

Owen Hurcum has become the first openly nonbinary mayor in the world. Originally from England, Hurcum moved to Bangor, North Wales, to study. They became enamored with the city and have lived there for several years now. They came out as nonbinary two years ago and describes themself as agender and genderqueer. They even helped organize the first ever Bangor Pride in 2019. Hurcum, who had previously served on Bangor City Council as Deputy Mayor and local councillor, was elected as Mayor last year. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed their formal induction, but this past May, they were officially sworn in and donned the mayoral chain. In addition to making history for the queer community, Hurcum is an inspiration for young folks looking to break into politics: they are the youngest mayor in Wales. “I just want to say a huge diolch (thank you) to all the lovely messages that are still coming in,” Hurcum shared on Twitter. “I know representation is not just putting on the chain and I will be judged by what we do as a team for Bangor during my year in office, but still, I am glad my election has resonated with so many.” Their book, Don't Ask About My Genitals, is set to be released in April next year. According to the book description, the work will include Hurcum's personal story, and it aims “to help other young genderqueer and nonbinary people who might otherwise think they are all alone.”
