Betty Campbell Tribute
Wales’ first Black headteacher, Betty Campbell, is remembered as “a pioneer and a rulebreaker” as well as an educator. That is why a monument of Campbell was recently unveiled in Cardiff city centre square. The bronze bust was designed and created by sculptor
Eve Shepherd, resulting from the Hidden Heroines campaign. Up until now, there have been no public statues of historical Welsh women anywhere in the country. The campaign sought to change that. Although Campbell died in 2017, her daughter and granddaughter have responded happily to the statue.
