Malad Valley Welsh Festival
This June, the 16th annual Malad Valley Welsh Festival will celebrate 156 years of Welsh history in southeastern Idaho. Pioneers from Wales settled Malad Valley in the 1850s and 1860s as the region reminded them of their home country. This year's gathering at Malad City Park will include an opening ceremony featuring the 2019 Festival Bard and the Knight of the Festival. Also on the weekend agenda are presentations on Welsh heroes and history, adult and youth poetry contests and readings, a photographic “Walk Through Wales,” family history and census displays of pioneer families, a fiction competition, Celtic music performances (including a harp and choral concert, a youth concert, and a piano ensemble concert), wagon rides to historic sites, a quilt show, art displays, food and craft/gift vendors, and kids' pioneer games and activities. Things come to a close on Saturday with the Chairing of the Festival Bard and a short gymanfa ganu. On Sunday a celebration of the 14oth anniversary of the founding of the Malad Presbyterian Church will feature traditional music and memories of this historic landmark.
