In the middle of the 20th century, Toronto’s churches took a modernist turn, one architecture photographer and Doublespace Photography co-founder Amanda Large documented using only two pieces of kit: a DSLR and a 50 mm lens. The result is her latest project, Fifty50: Fifty Modernist Churches, a 50mm Lens.
Instead of iconic cathedrals like St. James and Trinity-st. Paul’s, we’re treated to unornamented places of worship, some by iconic Toronto architects like Eberhard Zeidler and James A. Murray. The lens limited Large to tight vignettes – an intimate departure from the familiar wide-angle “hero” shots – while urban blemishes like street signs and wires were left in. It’s a refreshing visual style that sees the city’s ecclesiastical architecture brought back down to earth. DOUBLESPACEPHOTO.COM
