2006–2007 CHEVY/ GMC 2500 AND 3500 6.6L DURAMAX

-

The 2006–2007 Chevy/gmc Duramax trucks are considered to be the most reliable and desirable from the GM brand. Among other upgrades, the newfor-2006 LBZ engine received a stronger bottom end, increased fuel injection pressure and a revised variable-geometry turbocharger that’s said to be more aerodynamically efficient to help deliver smooth and immediate response while lowering emissions. With lots of aftermarket support, the Duramax is likely the most “civilized” of all our selections.

In 2006, the transmission was upgraded from a five-speed to the venerable Allison six-speed. This was the auto tranny all others were compared to at the time. Manual transmission was not available.

The GM 2500/3500 is the only 4x4 HD truck in our list with a true independent front suspension (IFS). In some circles, it’s considered much less durable than a truck with a solid front axle. There are many more bushings and other wearable items in an IFS suspension. However, most owners feel that the improved ride and precision handling more than make up for the drawbacks.

Sled-pulling, drag racing and hard off-roading have been known to bend the tie rods. Fortunately, there are several aftermarket upgrades available for the steering system to make it more durable. Lift kits and other suspension upgrades are numerous, although it’s best to tread lightly in this area. Moderation in lift amount and tire size will ensure that the front end lives a long and happy life. If heavy offroading, snow plowing and pulling are your thing, you might want to consider a truck with a solid front axle. (Of course, you could always swap one in.)
