THE FLORIDA KEYS

New resorts, sunny winters

- BY STEVE WINSTON

New resorts and sunny winters ensure a perfect vacation getaway.

Surrounded on all sides by warm waters, the Florida Keys are bathed in beautiful weather nearly every day of the year. Which means you can frolic in the water or laze in the sun all day and enjoy cool ocean breezes at night.

And now, you can frolic and relax in a wave of superb new or upgraded resorts in the Keys.

Scheduled to open on Key Largo this winter, Baker’s Cay Resort features five dogfriendly hectares on which you and Fido can play. There are two pools, a waterfall grotto, a nature trail, an Aveda salon and a beachside tequila/taco venue featuring hot sauces crafted from peppers grown on the property.

Also planned for an autumn opening in Key Largo is the Keys’ first adults-only, “luxury-inclusive” resort. Bungalows Key Largo boasts 135 stand-alone units, two pools, several restaurants and bars and 305 metres of shoreline.

Farther south, on Islamorada, the iconic Cheeca Lodge & Spa has reopened after extensive upgrades. The 11-hectare oceanfront resort now has a new lobby and guest rooms, along with a new pizzeria/pasta bistro, tiki bar, fishing pier, spa and a refurbished nine-hole golf course. A third pool, on the oceanfront, is scheduled to open soon.

There’s big news on the islands of Marathon, too. Near Seven Mile Bridge, Isla Bella Beach Resort is scheduled to open beachside in early 2019, with several continental restaurants, pools with bars, full-service spa and a marina.

Also in Marathon, the landmark Hawks Cay Resort, an AAA Four-diamond property, has just completed an impressive upgrade. The resort now features villas in addition to guest rooms, the Calm Waters Spa, sunset pool, Coral Cay kids’ activities centre and the Angler and Ale restaurant.

The Perry Hotel Key West is a boutique property situated on Stock Island in the Lower Keys, which showcases chic design elements, two signature restaurants, spectacular views and direct access to a marina and the ocean.

In Key West, the Havana Cabana Resort is a funky, “Old Cuba”-style resort on the waterfront, with a pool bar, food truck, 1950s cars in front, and a vintage Vespa motor scooter that guests can use.
