Toronto’s Ambitious YongeTOmorrow Plan Approved

-

In early Feb. 2021, Toronto’s City Council delivered a historic vote of 21–5 in favour of YongeTOmorrow, making the ambitious plan to makeover Toronto’s iconic Yonge Street official.

The new plan will see vehicular traffic restricted along parts of the major street for more pedestrians, cyclists, and green space.

“Yonge St. is a project 10 years in the making, and this historic vote solidifies its bright future,” said Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, who was instrumental in pushing the project forward. “Thank you to everyone who spoke in support of this big urban transformation.”

The announcement follows a historic and huge year in 2020 for cycling in Toronto, with the City implementing the most temporary and permanent bike lanes ever in one year.

Toronto’s Office of Recovery and Rebuild hopes the City’s successes in active transportation will be a model to move forward every year through the pandemic recovery and beyond.
