Del Bosco tastes gold

Fellow Canadian grabs bronze

-

Canadians were all over the X Games podium all weekend, with Chris Del Bosco, the Vail, Colo., native with dual citizenship, winning the men’s ski cross on Sunday.

He made a daring pass midway down the tough course and held on to beat to Filip Flisar of Slovenia and Canadian teammate Dave Duncan of London, Ont.

“I wasn’t really having the best starts, but first couple of features I was nailing pretty good and could make up some ground there. There was a pretty big draft going into the triple (rollers) and just made it happen.”

It was Del Bosco’s second X Games gold. He also won in 2010.

“Man, this is my favourite event. To come here and win gold, with Duncan (also) on the podium, a good day.”

In the women’s final, Marielle Thompson of Whistler, B.C., crashed while in the lead, allowing Norway’s Marte Gjefsen to win.

The weak field was missing injured former world champions Ashleigh Mcivor of Whistler, Kelsey Serwa of Kelowna, B.C., and France’s Ophelie Davide.

On Friday night, Mark Mcmorris, 18, of Regina won the men’s snowboard Big Air with a spectacular backside triple-cork 1440, then followed that up Saturday with a solid gold medal-winning run against a strong field in the men’s snowboard slopestyle, which will be an Olympic event in 2014.

Also Saturday, Dominique Maltais of Montreal and Maelle Ricker of North Vancouver went 1-3 in women’s snowboard cross.
