Fashion shines on Screen Actors Guild night

Hollywood’s biggest, brightest stars lit up the red carpet at the 18th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, held Sunday at the Shrine Exposition Center.

They shone in stunning gowns of soft neutrals and vibrant colours, all-over beading and embroidery and appliqué — and feathers, as seen in the Chanel worn by Emilia Clarke.

Viola Davis, winner for outstanding lead actress, opted for a flowing white Marchesa gown, featuring a gold embroidered bustier and draping at the waist.

Tilda Swinton waved as she passed by in a long-sleeved white gown. And Berenice Bejo wore a platinum beaded Ralph Lauren with a plunging neckline.

Wearing a pale grey strapless lace Calvin Klein with all-over appliqué flowers, Julianna Margulies told reporters her choice of gown reflected her relaxed mood.

“It felt very romantic to me,” she said.

The newly engaged Katrina Bowden echoed the sentiment in a white strapless Amsale she chose for herself. But Ellie Kemper couldn’t fathom choosing her own gown.

“I get very uncomfortable trying on clothes. I don’t know if you’re like that too,” said the actress, wearing a beaded teal tank-style Lorena Sarbu. “So it’s so great having a stylist do it for me.”

In addition to shades of green, the carpet appeared at times a kaleidoscope of colour.

Sofia Vergara wore a strapless pink Marchesa gown, while Penelope Ann Miller stopped by in a blue David Meister, featuring all-over embroidery. The actress, accompanied by her 11-year-old daughter, Eloisa, paused to talk about The Artist.

“I’m very nostalgic about old Hollywood,” Miller said. “I love old movies and I love that The Artist reminds us about why we fall in love with movies.” Add to that its stars. While Dick Van Dyke was telling reporters about an injury he sustained the day before in rehearsals, George Clooney caught everybody’s eye.

The Descendants star was over by the audience bleachers, signing autographs for everyone and anyone who presented him with a sheet of paper and feeling the love with chants of “George.”

Clooney’s pal Brad Pitt appeared moments later with Angelina Jolie, wearing a black Jenny Peckham gown, on his arm. The Hollywood couple waved as they rounded the corner and entered the Shrine for the show.
