Cogliano leads Ducks to win

-

Andrew Cogliano has made a point of shooting more in recent games.

With the luck he had against Phoenix, he might just start shooting on every touch.

Taking advantage of shaky goaltending, Cogliano had the second-fastest hat trick in Ducks history, scoring three goals in less than 7 minutes to help Anaheim open the second half of the season with a 4-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night.

“Goals are goals, but it might have been the ugliest hat trick I’ve ever seen,” Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. “I’m glad they went in.” So is Cogliano. With Phoenix getting the jump on the Ducks in the first period, Cogliano snatched away the momentum with a flurry of goals, notching his first career hat trick in 6:51 — second only to Bobby Ryan’s three goals in 2:21 that spanned two periods in 2009.

The fifth natural hat trick in team history, along with Jonas Hiller’s 24 saves and Teemu Selanne’s emptynet goal, gave Anaheim its ninth win in 11 games.

Sabres 3 Canadiens 1

MONTREAL / Paul Gaustad stuck it to the Montreal Canadiens on the ice, and then again with his mouth.

Gaustad had a goal and two assists to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a win over Montreal.

Ryan Miller made 27 saves for Buf- falo, which won its second straight road game following a 12-game losing streak away from home.

“It’s always good to get a win on the road and we just have to turn it around quickly and quit patting ourselves on the back and go out and get the next one,” said Gaustad, who set up Ville Leino’s fourth goal 4:01 into the second period to tie it at 1.

Gaustad beat Carey Price from the goalmouth to give the Sabres the lead 6:17 into the third and assisted as Patrick Kaleta scored into an empty net with 51.1 seconds remaining.

Tempers flared between Gaustad and the Canadiens after the insurance tally.

“He’s got a big mouth and he likes to run it, so what can we do?” Price said. “You can’t worry about what he’s got to say because he doesn’t do much out there.”

Canucks 3 Hawks 2 (OT)

VANCOUVER / Daniel Sedin scored at 3:37 of overtime to lift the Vancouver Canucks to a victory over the Chicago Blackhawks.

Ryan Kesler and Cody Hodgson scored in regulation for Vancouver, and Cory Schneider stopped 37 shots to improve to 5-0 this season in games decided in overtime.
