A new poll of more than one million men names Sofia Vergara, star of TV’S Modern Family, as the most desirable woman in the world.

The voluptuous actress, who in July turns 40, is the oldest celebrity to nab the honour since the annual AskMen.com survey began in 2000.

In fact, this year’s Top 99 list — published Tuesday — features more women 30 or older than it does women 25 and younger. Eleven of the honourees are at least 35 years of age, with the eldest, Demi Moore, on the brink of 50.

The women are just as diverse in beauty. The stars making the cut for 2012 vary in everything from ethnic- ity (Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Priyanka Chopra) to body type (Adele, Kim Kardashian, Kat Dennings) to professional background (comedian Kristen Wiig, UFC girl Arianny Celeste, and Prince William’s bride, Kate.)

Vergara — a mature, Colombian actress whose talents include modelling, comedy, acting and singing — may be the epitome of this trend.

“I think it has a lot to do with the broadening profile of Internet users, who are varying more and more in both age and background,” says James Bassil, editor-in-chief of the Montreal-based website.

“I also think a lot of guys are surprised to hear she’s (almost) 40, because she doesn’t look it.”

Vergara is also very active on Twitter, which was a common theme among many of this year’s honourees. Bassil suggested this is evidence of the growing link between desirability and perceived accessibility.

To wit, many of the female stars who failed to make the 2012 list after years of regular appearances — Jennifer Aniston and Angelina Jolie among them — aren’t regular users of social media.

“Some big Old Guard names have disappeared,” said Bassil.

“Last year, we saw representa- tives from both factions side by side, whereas this year, we’re very much moving toward the new generation. These are the women we’ll keep seeing on the list for years to come.”

Stars named on the site’s latest countdown include actresses Emma Stone, Rooney Mara and Zooey Deschanel, models Kate Upton, Miranda Kerr and Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley, and singers Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce. The full list can be viewed at Askmen.com.

The online poll was conducted between Nov. 16, 2011, and Jan. 27, 2012, with 1.32 million votes cast worldwide (excluding the United Kingdom). No margin of error is given.
