Ramsay’s Hell returns

- ALEX STRACHAN

On Hell’s Kitchen, where there’s smoke, Gordon Ramsay is likely to be breathing fire.

Hell’s Kitchen marks its 10th season, with 18 Kitchen hopefuls prepared to spice up another summer of burnt risotto and uncooked chicken.

Over its 10 seasons, more than 100,000 would-be chefs have tried out on Hell’s Kitchen, according to Fox, and some 10,000 customers have been served — though, given Hell’s Kitchen’s record for contestants not living up to Chef Ramsay’s standards, it would be more accurate to say that 10,000 patrons showed up for dinner and 9,900 were sent home hungry and unfed, after Ramsay shut the kitchen down in a rage. It’s become a summer tradition to count the minutes before Ramsay utters That Word for the first time.

For the record, that moment clocks in at the five-minute, 58-second mark, which is slow by Ramsay’s standards. In his defence, though, he doesn’t appear onscreen until the five-minute, 56-second mark, which means, technically speaking, that it only takes Ramsay two seconds before he loses it. That’ll be a tough record to beat.

Chef Ramsay’s fiery command of the English language and hot temper has yet to grow old, judging from the numbers for last season. Hell’s Kitchen is consistently one of the summer’s most-watched programs among younger viewers. (Fox — 9 p.m., Citytv — 10 p.m.)

How much Gordon Ramsay is too much? Ramsay also returns for a third season of MasterChef, a competition that judges the home-cooked dishes of amateur chefs. (Fox, CTV — 10 p.m.)

Jimmy Buffett appears as a maverick helicopter pilot in a Hawaii Five-0 repeat from November. (Global — 8 p.m.; CBS — 11 p.m.)

Barney and Robin find themselves in the same boat in How I Met Your Mother after they both hide a secret from their significant others. (CBS — 9 p.m.)
