Southwinds offers resort living at its best

Project perfect for lovers of great outdoors

- Ann Sutherland

Southwinds, a new condominium project by Carrington Communities, boasts resort living without leaving the city.

It’s located in the Cape Codinspired community of Lake Summerside, the city’s first and only freshwater recreational lake.

To celebrate Southwinds’ entrance into Lake Summerside, Carrington is throwing a party Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.

“You can view the new building and tour two show suites,” says Nanette Charest, sales manager for Carrington. “We’ll have light refreshments and a DJ live on location so we’ll have that beach-party atmosphere.”

Located at 6084 Stanton Drive SW, Southwinds is the only apartment-style condo in the community. It backs on to a large park that will include trails, a ball diamond, skating rink and toboggan hill.

Of course, the main attraction in Summerside is the lake. Those who purchase at Southwinds automatically become members of the Lake Summerside Residents Association, which gives them exclusive access to the lake, a sandy beach, the club house and all the activities that go along with life at the lake: swimming, boating and fishing, skating and cross-country skiing.

“The residents association also offers Pilates, yoga and boot-camp classes,” says Charest. “There are outdoor movie nights, and you can sign out kayaks, play beach volleyball and tennis. It’s a very active community.”

The four-storey Southwinds has 98 suites ranging from the one-bedroom up to two bedrooms.

“We also have unique onebedroom-plus-den units that have nice layouts,” says Charest. “Buyers can add a wardrobe to the den and use it as a second bedroom, so there is flexibility depending on the buyer’s needs.”

There are also the very popular two-bedroom-plus-den suites that have wraparound balconies and 1,275 square feet of living space.

“We actually have only one of those suites left,” Charest points out. “They sold out very quickly. The one we have available is in a great corner location overlooking the park and is priced at $305,900.”

Prices start at $159,900 for a 650-square-foot one-bedroom unit. The two-bedroom suites start at $214,900 for 867 square feet.

Prices include laminate flooring in the kitchen and living room, and carpet in the bedrooms. Owners also receive a six-piece appliance package that includes a frontload washer and dryer. Maple cabinets and a full-height ceramic subway tile backsplash give the kitchen a fresh, contemporary feel.

While there is the option to upgrade to granite countertops and hardwood or even cork or leather flooring, for example, Charest says that quite often buyers don’t feel the need.

“Carrington goes a step above when choosing the finishes. We have two contemporary designer packages that we feel offer style and quality.”

Right now, buyers have the option of either purchasing a prefinished suite, or choosing an unfinished one and selecting their own finishes.

Southwinds is attracting a mix of buyers. The majority are first-time buyers. On the other end are the empty nesters who have downsized and want a carefree lifestyle.

The building has a fully equipped fitness centre, a social room, and a handy guest room. There is also secure underground parking, heated parking, and convenient guest parking.

The area is already welldeveloped, so Southwinds residents have all the city conveniences at hand.

There is plenty of retail and services along Ellerslie Road, plus there is more shopping at South Edmonton Common. The Anthony Henday provides quick access to other city locations.

Carrington prides itself on its solid reputation in the building industry.

“We’ve been in the business for 39 years with a great track record,” says Charest. “Those purchasing at Southwinds can be confident they are receiving a quality home, excellent service and choice.”
