Rebels on a roll since boss Sutter took over as head coach of WHL team

My spies have been keeping their ears to the railway tracks and their eyes wide open in arenas around Alberta watching junior hockey. There’s a lot going on … The Sutter family had a minireunion of sorts at the Enmax Centrium at Red Deer on Saturday night. Brothers Gary, Duane and Rich were all at the Western Hockey League game. Rich’s son, Luke, was also there, as an assistant captain with the Saskatoon Blades.

Rebels owner, president, general manager and head coach Brent Sutter steered Red Deer to its seventh straight win since he took over the coaching role in mid-November. He was asked after the 3-0 victory over Saskatoon if he was having fun.

“I don’t know if I’m having fun,” he said. “As a coach, I think I have to always remember you are never as good as you think you are, and never as bad as you think you are.”

Nothing about fun, it seems.

Sutter said the win over the Blades was the most complete game the Rebels have played this season.

Just wondering if the MasterCard Memorial Cup will be held at Red Deer in the next few years. More seats have been added to the west end of the Centrium, with new skyboxes currently being built.

The amazing story in Whitecourt is just getting better and better. The Wolverines are leading the North Division of the Alberta Junior Hockey League in scoring in their first junior A season, with 20-yearold Mathieu Guertin (23 goals, 48 points) and Jerome Raymond (24 goals, 44 points) sitting 1-2 in the scoring race.

The Wolverines are also holding their own in the standings. They are currently tied for third place in the North Division with the Bonnyville Pontiacs at 37 points.

Next action for Whitecourt is Friday night, when the Spruce Grove Saints visit.

Meet Craig Domke. It’s a safe bet to say when the AJHL referee makes a call, he has everyone’s best interest in mind. Domke is an emergency physician at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital.

He was recently awarded resident of the year at the Grey Nuns medical staff association banquet.

There have been countless debates over the years about twinning Highway 63 to Fort McMurray.

Whenever I hear about the discussion, I think of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons. The wheels on the team bus roll down that highway kilometre after kilometre carrying young men following their hockey dreams.

They need to be protected, on and off the ice.

Enough said.
