We stand up for veterans

-

Re: “Legion demands fairness for vets,” by Gordon Moore, Letters, Dec. 8. I would like to emphasize our unwavering commitment toward Canadian veterans and their families.

First, the funeral and burial program is available to all veterans who die as a result of a service-related disability.

This program is one of the most comprehensive offered in developed countries and is administered by the Last Post Fund. It has helped the families of more than 10,000 veterans since 2006.

With combined funeral assistance and the full cost of burial, up to $10,000 has been provided to the family of a deceased veteran.

Our government is providing Canada’s veterans and their families with unprecedented levels of support, and our programs are constantly reviewed to ensure their needs are met.

Just this week, I announced measures to help veterans connect with jobs in the private sector as they transition to civilian life. These initiatives build upon our recently launched Veterans Transition Action Plan to assist veterans and their families with every aspect of this new phase in their lives.

And last week, Defence Minister Peter MacKay announced improved benefits for reservists.

We are ensuring veterans have the services they need and are receiving them in a hassle-free manner.

The Royal Canadian Legion is a key partner. We are accomplishing a lot and look forward to working together in the future on behalf of veterans.

Our Conservative government’s record speaks for itself. We stand up for Canada’s veterans and we will continue to do so because it is the right thing to do. Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Ottawa
